Sweeeeeet!

The next major 'event' at The Rake will be the Lambic Festival which starts on Sunday 1st November. This one is Toms baby and he's going all the way to belgium to get the beers next weekend.
Expect the unexpected with regard to some of these. Some of them will probably have never been seen in the UK before and perhaps never will again.
As far as we know this is the first time a beer festival in the UK has been exclusively dedicated to Lambic beers and we're really excited about this one.
Festiva… Continue

MAKE BURNS NIGHT A BEERY ONE!

As Burn’s Night approaches London’s only dedicated beer tasting business, lovebeer@borough, is pleased to announce it is welcoming leading independent Scottish brewer Harviestoun to celebrate the event in style.

Award-winning Scottish brewery Harviestoun, based in Alva at the foot of the rolling Ochil Hills, is renowned all over the world for its immensely drinkable beers and now you can meet head brewer Stuart Cail for an early Burn’s Night celebration in London this January 23, with a range of the brewery’s beers and a wee something to nibble on after in the form of the ‘chieftain o' the puddin-race’, Haggis, with tatties & neeps.

Always renowned for its innovation, the brewery is widely acknowledged to have produced one of the first blonde beers, in the shape of Bitter & Twisted, which helped kick-start the rediscovery of the delights of real ale by lager drinkers, and is still leading the charge on exciting beers to this day.

More recently beer (and whisky) lovers on both sides of the Atlantic have warmly received the various versions of the brewery’s complex and esoteric delight Ola Dubh. The name Ola Dubh means Black Oil, and is a gloriously dark, rich thick 8%ABV beer aged in different Highland Park Whisky casks.

The beer comes in 12, 16, 18, 30 and 40-year-old versions* and is ideal as a digestif or paired with strong cheeses like Stinking Bishop or Époisses (*the years refer to the age of the whisky casks the beer is aged in).

The tasting will also include Ptarmigan cask ale, the seasonal brew Haggis Hunter and a comparative tasting of the brewery’s award-winning Schiehallion in both cask and bottle format, much to the delight of co-proprietor of lovebeer@borough and leading beer writer Melissa Cole: “Schiehallion makes it into my top 10 list of drinkable beers every time and it’s just one part of a well-balanced, interesting and innovative range of beers from a very accomplished brewery.

“I’m particularly looking forward to the comparative tastings of the different ages of Ola Dubh, experiencing the intense aromas and flavours that barrel aging brings to the beer and also to watch people’s faces as this experience unfolds for them.”

Adding his thoughts Stuart Cail says: “From Bitter & Twisted to Ola Dubh, and everything in between, the Harviestoun portfolio allows you to go on a journey of flavour that will leave your taste buds tingling and I look forward to our tasting sessions to celebrate Burn’s Night, albeit a little early!”

Tickets are just £15 and there are currently two tasting events scheduled, on Saturday January 23 at 1pm and 3.30pm, but tickets are already in demand by word of mouth alone, so more announcements may follow.

Tickets are available from Utobeer or the Rake (14 Winchester Walk, Borough Market, London, SE1 9AG) or by emailing melissa@love-beer.co.uk or calling 020 7378 9461.

D'em Bones!

Well, well, there's been another study that beer in moderation is good for you, and the top news is they have found that beer using quality ingredients, not adjuncts like corn or rice, are the ones that offer the most benefit.

This isn't a surprise to most of us who drink good beer (because when you have to spend an evening on rubbish beer you know all about it in the morning, that's got to be a good clue) but it's always nice to have it validated and it's yet another rallying cry for those who advocate drinking less but better in the face of all the horrendous anti-alcohol lobbying that's been going on recently.

But anyway, that aside, I reckon I could have saved them a whole world of bother as I must be an excellent example of how drinking beer is good for you.

I have to admit that exercise has sadly gone by the wayside in the last few months but the acquisition of a bike and look at a picture in the Publican this week has put new emphasis on my need to lose weight - however, I also went to the quacks the other day and, as they only see me once every other year, he decided I needed things like blood pressure etc checked and everything is spot on! My blood pressure is 120/79 and when I had a cholesterol test done a few months ago it was so low they checked it three times to make sure they weren't getting a faulty reading!

So, by this rationale, I reckon I've got a skeleton like Wolverine - or was it just a shabby excuse for putting a picture of Hugh Jackman on my blog? Personally, it's a win-win!
